The Osher Foundation's President explained their generosity: "We recognize that it is not only the programming [of the UK lifelong learning initiative] that makes it so remarkable. It is also the wonderful community of intellectually vigorous members, who give so generously of their time, talent, and financial resources to help keep the program robust and dynamic while also remaining affordable. We are inspired by your commitment and proud to be associated with your fine program."
Lifelong learners are an important part of the University community. UK President Eli Capilouto had this to say to lifelong learners at the University: "The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) is a distinctive part of the UK family. It is a special community committed to the cause of learning and steadfast in their pursuit of knowledge and new ideas. At its core, OLLI represents the crucible of creativity and imagination that defines a college campus." -- UK President Eli Capilouto (from our Member Handbook)
For over 50 years the University of Kentucky has been offering lifelong learning programs for older adults. Throughout our history, these programs have survived times of budget cutbacks, economic downturns and extensive growth in membership due to our generous donors.
One member in particular who stands out is Marguerite Simpson. In 1969, convinced of the value and necessity of these lifelong learning programs, Marguerite began making annual gifts sufficient to keep them alive in times of cutbacks. She then bequeathed her estate as an endowment to ensure lifelong learning at the University of Kentucky would survive for many years. Forty years later, the OLLI still benefits from her visionary philanthropy and from the gifts of members who followed her lead. All donations to the Fund for Lifelong Learning benefit, in full, the lifelong learning programs at the University of Kentucky. Since annual appeals began in 2011, more than $74,875 has been raised to support the lifelong learning programs at the University of Kentucky.
