The winner of the UK Spelling Bee, held each year in early March, qualifies to compete in the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee. The UK Bee is open to winners of school spelling bees – public, private and home school associations – who have not completed the eighth grade. Students can participate from almost half of Kentucky's counties. More information is available at SpellingBee.com.
The First Amendment Center fund covers the cost of the Bee, the trophy, and transportation and hotel for the winner and one parent to the national bee outside of Washington, D.C. The average cost of the Bee is $7,500.
This is one of the events sponsored by the Scripps Howard First Amendment Center, founded more than 25 years ago to promote the values of freedom of expression and a greater understanding of this great American liberty. The center cosponsors high school and university essay contests, holds an annual First Amendment celebration on campus and recognizes a Kentuckian who has made a signification stand for the First Amendment.
