Career Training in Oncology Program Fund A Project of Big Blue Crowdfunding
The Markey Cancer Center Career Training in Oncology Program (MCC CTOP) is an enhanced training program for students who are natives of Appalachian Kentucky in which students obtain preparation for pursuing cancer-focused careers. The program provides students with cancer research, clinical observation, education and outreach experience. A central goal of the program is to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to directly impact their home communities in order to aid in reducing the cancer burden in the Appalachian region in the future.
Appalachian Kentucky has significant challenges associated with health, socioeconomic, and education disparities. This predominantly rural region not only has the highest cancer incidence and mortality rates in the United States, it is also one of the most economically disadvantaged, medically underserved, and poorly educated regions of the country in which less than 1% of residents earn doctoral degrees. These disparities form the basis for the need to create targeted educational and scientific workforce preparedness and health literacy intervention strategies for this population.
Funds raised will support stipends for student participants, effort of the faculty director/advisor, and outreach activities.
CTOP directly supports the MCC's goals to education the next generation of cancer scientists and clinical professionals and engage the community in cancer outreach activities.
*All of your gifts will be deposited into the Career Training in Oncology Program Fund. If we exceed our goal, all funds raised will support the education and training of the next generation of cancer scientists and clinical professionals or be utilized for outreach activities.
